Partridge, John (c1620-1706)

From Partridge Nest

John Partridge was born about 1620, likely in England, to _______ Partridge. He died on 28 May 1706 in Medfield, Massachusetts.[1] He married Magdalene Bullard (daughter of John Bullard and Magdalene George) on 15 Dec 1655 in Medfield.[2] She was born about 18 Oct 1635. She died on 27 Dec 1676 in Medfield.[3]

John Partridge, along with his brother William, and sister Margery traveled from England to Connecticut aboard an unnamed ship in 1650, along with John Beebe, Husbandman, late of Broughton in the County of Northampton. John Beebe wrote his will on board this ship on 18 May 1650, and both William and John witnessed the will. This will is on file at the State House in Vol. II of the State Records. [4]. This will, evidently written while sailing has the signatures of William and John Partridge as witnesses. These signatures purportedly match those found in the record's of Medfield.

John Partridge settled in Medfield, Massachusetts from Dedham in 1653, and was accompanied by his brother William and sister Margery. He was in Dedham, Massachusetts at least a year earlier than that, for on "ye 1 Mo. 1652" he shared with others in the division of 500 acres of land.[5]. John took up a house lot on Bachelor's Roe, later North Street. His place was near his brother William, and Thomas Mason, later husband of Margery Partridge. John signed the proprietors agreement of Medfield [6]. John was chosen clerk of the market in 1672. In 1676, at the burning of Medfield by the Indians, John's house and barn were destroyed, together with a quantity of grain and several head of cattle [7].

His dwelling, now gone, stood on the crest of a knoll just southerly of the intersection of Hill and Holliston Streets. The present dwelling on the site of the old, was built by "Old Joe" Curtis, Joseph Curtis' son, shortly before he died in 1791.
