Lovet Partridge was born to Jonathan Partridge and Abigail Lovet in Sherborn, Massachusetts, 13 Sep 1750, He married in Mendon, Massachusetts, 19 May 1774, Sarah Hayward of Mendon, Massachusetts. They resided for a time in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, where two children were born. Lovet removed first to Bakersfield, Vermont, in 1778, and then to North Westminster, Vermont between before 1790, then by 1800 he was in Branford, Connecticut and then in 1810, North Haven, Connecticut. There are no records for their deaths or burials.

A guardian bond was placed upon David Taft for $100 on 12 Nov 1764 when he registered and began serving as the guardian over Lovet. Jonathan, Lovet’s father died in 1758 and Jonathan reaching the age of fourteen requested that David be admitted as guardian over him. Lovet was enumerated in the special census of Vermont in 1778 in Bakersfield. Unfortunately, Bakersfield vital records did not start being recorded until 1792, leaving any early records of births for Lovet’s children unknown. In 1777, Vermont declared its independence from New York and became an Independent Republic. In order to prepare for statehood and to provide its share of soldiers for the Revolutionary War a census was taken in 1778, in which Lovet was enumerated at Bakersfield.

Lovet served during the Revolutionary War as a private in Capt. Job Knapp’s company, Col. Nathan Tyler’s regiment. He entered service 30 Jul 1780 and was discharged on 7 Aug 1780 after serving for 12 days. During that time his company marched on the alarm of 27 Jul 1780 to Tiverton, Rhoda Island.

There is a significant gap in the children of Lovet and Sarah, covering a 15-year period of 1776-1791, and then 1791 to 1798. It’s possible that Sally and Parana may have been born within these periods, it is also possible that Lovet married a second time about 1791 and the children other than Abigail and Dolly were born to a second marriage.

This family is difficult to piece together through the early census. Our knowledge of the family composition in comparison to the early census enumerations indicate we are lacking some key pieces of the puzzle. I call these situations an “Enumerative Enigma.” I think this phrase highlights the challenge of interpreting the cryptic details of early census records—where only numbers represent household members, leaving us to piece together their identities and relationships.

1810 Census – North Haven, Connecticut

Lovet was living in the township of North Haven, Connecticut in 1810, but based on his neighbors’ names, unless they all picked up and moved from Branford to North Haven, then this was a change in jurisdiction rather than a change in location. In the 1810 census the household was enumerated with the following members: 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45+ and 2-females under 10, 1 female 26-44, 1 female 45+.
