John Partridge was born to Jonathan Partridge and Anne Phipps in Sherborn, Massachusetts, Oct 28, 1746. He married at Barre, Massachusetts, Oct 7, 1773, Mrs. Phebe Boyden, widow of Micah Boyden and daughter of Silas and Deborah (Buck) Sears, of Greenwich, Massachusetts. They resided at Barre, where the births of four children are recorded. John’s death is not recorded in the Barre town records but his wife is, and she dies there on 7 Jun 1825, a. 76 yrs., and she is listed as a widow at the time. The location of the burial for John and Phebe is unknown.
Children of John Partridge and Phebe Sears:
- Silas Partridge, born Jun 5, 1774.
- Rhoda Partridge, born Jul 10, 1776; died 23 Feb 1846; married May 7, 1806, James Newcomb of Oakham, Massachusetts. She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Barre.
- Chloe Partridge, born Sep 20, 1779; died in 1863; a marriage intention was filed on 30 May 1804 in Wendell, Massachusetts between Lt. Ephraim Dresser and Chloe, and after their marriage on 7 Jun 1804 in Barre, they moved to Wendell where they had six children born to them. She died there in 1863 and is buried in the South Cemetery.
- John Partridge, born Mar 27, 1782.
1790 Census – Barre, Massachusetts
The 1790 census shows that this family was still residing in Barre, Massachusetts and that all the children named above were enumerated within it. While the 1790 census does not denote names, except for that of the head of household, we can often derive the individuals within the census by their sex and ages. In 1790,
Name | Sex | Birth Year or Age | Age Bracket in Census |
---|---|---|---|
John Partridge | M | 1746 | Male 16+ |
Phebe Sears | F | c.1752 | Female |
Silas Partridge | M | 1774 | Male 16+ |
Rhoda Partridge | F | 1776 | Female |
Chloe Partridge | F | 1779 | Female |
John Partridge | M | 1782 | Male -16 |
1800 Census – Barre, Massachusetts
I believe John and his wife Phebe were enumerated in the 1800 census in Barre as well. He is listed as John Partridge and shows a male over 16, male over 45, and female over 16, female over 45, residing in the house, as well as a female under 10. There were also a John Partridge 2nd and a Thaddeus Partridge in Barre in 1800. The 2d in the vital records is also used to reference the John Partridge son of Thaddeus who married Hannah Rice. The enumeration of this census is difficult to match up with the known family as it introduces a much younger member, and we’re missing one of the daughters, or both daughters, if the one female aged 16-25 is the wife of the male aged 16-25. It should be noted that Chloe Partridge was listed in her 1804 marriage record as being of Dana. It’s possible she was living with another family as a servant by the time of the 1800 census.
Name | Sex | Birth Year or Age | Age Bracket in Census |
---|---|---|---|
John Partridge | M | 1746 | Male 45+ |
Phebe Sears | F | c.1752 | Female 45+ |
John Partridge | M | 1782 | Male 16-25 |
Rhoda or Chloe Partridge? | F | 1776 | Female 16-25 |
Unknown | F | 1791-1800 | Female -10 |
I am unable to locate John or Phebe as head of household in either the 1810 or 1820 census. I am unable to positively identify either Silas or John Jr. in any future census after 1800.
